Jeffrey Pick’s career journey from patient care associate to senior director of triage clinical call center

Jeffrey Pick is not someone who turns down a new challenge. He sees it as an opportunity to grow your skills. It’s this determination and willingness to take his nursing career in new directions that has led to his successful career journey at Northwell Health — beginning as a patient care associate to where he is today, as the senior director of triage at the Clinical Call Center.
Jeff began his career journey at Northwell Health in 2005, when he learned about an opportunity to work as a patient care associate at Glen Cove Hospital. While at Glen Cove Hospital, he received his AAS and BSN nursing degrees through tuition support provided by Northwell. Following, Jeff was offered a registered nurse position by his nursing manager. “I am grateful that as a nursing student I was able to work as a patient care associate, which started my wonderful career,” says Jeff. “Not only does Northwell provide excellent growth opportunities, but they also provide classes, leadership programs and the support to become successful.” Jeff started as a registered nurse on the medical/surgical unit until he transferred to acute rehab in 2013.
In 2014, Jeff started his journey at the Clinical Call Center at Northwell Health as a registered nurse. Jeff’s inspiration to join the call center team came from previous experience. “I used to own a non-clinical call center in my first career before I was a nurse so when I saw the opportunity to work as a clinician in a call center, I was excited.” That’s why Jeff jumped at the opportunity to use his nursing skills in a call center setting. “I am so appreciative that Northwell has so many opportunities in so many different areas so anyone can do what they love.”
Today, Jeff is responsible for the triage team at the Clinical Call Center at Northwell Health. The triage registered nursing team assists patients by evaluating their health over the phone to provide medical guidance and helps find the appropriate immediate medical care. After evaluations, patients may be requested to seek medical attention pending the severity of their ailment.
Jeff oversees a team of managers, supervisors and staff that handle everything from call quality, speed to answer and call outcomes. He is also involved in the growth of new programs and contracts. Jeff shared, “I love being able to instill my ideas to make my department a better place to work for the team which in turn helps the patients we serve.”
Jeff is most proud that the Call Center is accredited as a Center of Excellence for providing outstanding triage services. According to Jeff, “The path to accreditation was a huge undertaking and challenge, but most rewarding when we were successful. This really shows we are meeting and exceeding the standards from the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch, demonstrating we are really taking great care of the patients we serve using evidence-based practice.”
When asked what advice he would give anyone looking to take the first step in their career, Jeff replied, “My advice is to be open minded and always keep learning. Take on new challenges and do not let fear hold you back. We all learn as we go so take the leap of faith and believe in yourself. You might fall along the way, but as long as you get up and learn, you will continue to grow in your role and be better off for it.”

Celebrating Women’s History Month and a culture committed to growth

This year, the theme for Women’s History Month is: Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity & Inclusion. We connected with two of our Northwell team members, Celenise and Caitlin, from the Women in Healthcare Business Employee Resource Group (BERG) at Northwell Health, who share their journeys and career experience. Join us as we explore how they utilized Northwell’s professional development resources to grow their careers and felt supported along the way.
Celenise M. Mahmood, senior learning and organizational development specialist, revenue cycle
Celenise was drawn to Northwell due to its renowned commitment to delivering high-quality patient care and its innovative approach to healthcare. In her current role, her primary responsibility is to design, implement and evaluate learning and development initiatives tailored specifically to the revenue cycle department. Celenise began her journey at Northwell in 2014 as an administrative support associate and grew within our organization with access to programs such as our BERGs, tuition assistance for continued education, career coaching and mentorship opportunities with seasoned healthcare leaders. In 2016, she transitioned to a financial counselor at Lenox Hill Hospital. Then, she was promoted to senior revenue cycle quality and performance analyst in 2018. Five years later, she was promoted to her current role of senior learning and organizational development specialist.
With over a decade of experience and through her networking connections, Celenise is a true advocate for her BERG members and a co-lead of the Women in Healthcare BERG membership development committee. She shares the importance of Northwell’s BERGs because, “becoming a BERG member has had a significant impact on my career journey at Northwell by providing opportunities for networking, mentorship and career coaching to help further my professional development.”
As a woman of Puerto Rican and Trinidadian heritage, Celenise feels our BERGs, like Women in Healthcare BERG, Hispanic Latino BERG, and African American/Caribbean BERG, reinforce this year’s theme of diversity, inclusion and belonging for Women’s History Month: “They provide a platform to connect and support one another, ultimately contributing to a more equitable and empowered workforce,” she said.
Caitlin Brown, registered nurse, Glen Cove Hospital
Caitlin Brown began her career at Northwell in 2019 as a newly graduated registered nurse at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in the telemetry/medical surgical unit. In 2021, she transitioned to her current role as a registered nurse in the emergency department at Glen Cove Hospital. Northwell has supported Caitlin’s career journey in many ways as she is currently receiving tuition assistance as a graduate student in the Northwell Health Stony Brook University Cohort for her master’s degree in nursing education. She has participated in Northwell’s mentorship program at Glen Cove Hospital both as a mentee and now advocates for her fellow team members as a mentor in that same program. Caitlin is also certified in the trauma nursing core course (TNCC) and achieved level three (the highest level) within the clinical ladder program, now serving as the clinical ladder co-chair at Glen Cove Hospital. “Being a part of Northwell, these opportunities have truly paved the way to support my career goals and professional development,” shared Caitlin.
This year’s theme resonates closely with Caitlin, as an active member of the Women in Healthcare BERG, African American/Caribbean BERG and Glen Cove Hospital’s Equity, Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging Committee. Caitlin shared, “I will always be an advocate in our workplace and community. This year’s theme also aligns with Northwell’s mission and commitment to the Culture of C.A.R.E.”
When asked why Caitlin believes it is so important for Northwell to have BERGs, Caitlin shared, “BERGs are a significant part of being a team member at Northwell. BERGs enable team members to make connections, network and learn from those who share similar interests and backgrounds.”

How attending a veteran recruiting event changed Luis Phillips’ career journey, for the better.

In 2014, Luis Phillips attended one of our veteran recruiting events, where he learned how his military experience could play a valuable part in a future at Northwell Health. Eight years later, Luis is now a senior information technology & services (IT&S) process management administrator at Northwell, where he utilizes his technical skills obtained in the military, to do what he loves every day.
Luis provides operational support to our Clinical Informatics team at Northwell in planning, organizing, evaluating, implementing, and identifying areas for process improvement on various nursing initiatives, related to Electronic Medical Records (EMR). This allows for enhanced clinical quality, patient safety, workflow efficiency, clinician satisfaction, and patient experience. What excites Luis most about his role, is working to solve complex challenges in healthcare around information technology and understanding that those efforts will help transform the way healthcare is delivered to our patients.
During his time in the U.S. Army, Luis held the title of Motor Transport Operator, where his responsibilities ensured the safety of senior ranking personnel as well as the secure distribution of critical equipment and resources to support various missions. During his eight-year career, he developed strategic agility skills to adapt to an ever-changing environment in order to overcome challenges quickly. This skill was vital during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic when Northwell had to rework quickly to an ever-changing environment. Luis shared, “What’s truly been rewarding is that my past experience helped me develop operational skills to help improve patient outcomes and staff satisfaction across our hospitals today.”
As a member of Northwell’s VALOR BERG (Business Employee Resource Group), Luis is able to hold onto his other passion of participating in veteran-focused initiatives that impact our organization and our community. He enjoys being a member of the VALOR BERG because it has helped create awareness about different programs, such as our Side-by-Side concert event, and initiatives within Northwell that support veterans in the workforce. “I strongly encourage anyone to look into opportunities with Northwell Health, where you will have access to resources and career growth options at every turn.”

What does the 2020 vision for Northwell Health look like?
Northwell Health will measure success in 2020 on our ability to maintain a strong financial footing while preserving our mission to improve the health of the communities we serve. Achieving that is a significant challenge in the midst of the dynamic, ever-changing environment in which health care providers operate.
There’s growing competition among both traditional providers and new entrants trying to break into the market such as Google, Amazon and CVS, to name a few. Government intervention looms over the horizon. No matter what others are doing, delivering great care should always be our first priority. Our patients are why we’re here.
Taking a stance on issues we believe in is another area we won’t shy away from, whether it’s immigration reform or common-sense gun legislation. We’ll stand up for our beliefs, not because it is easy, but because it is hard. We need to be a voice for the disenfranchised in the communities we serve.
Explain why the year ahead is a crucial one for Northwell’s capital investments.
Beyond preserving our mission in the year ahead, we look to:
- increase our investments in basic infrastructure, technology and people;
- expand inpatient bed capacity at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and North Shore University, Staten Island University Hospital and Southside hospitals, which are routinely at or over capacity;
- target continued ambulatory growth;
- try to maintain a good payer-mix balance; and
- achieve a higher operating margin, which would strengthen the health system’s credit rating, enabling us to borrow at lower interest rates as we continue to invest in our future.
I’m excited about the transformation at hospitals happening throughout the health system, from the new Corey Critical Care Pavilion at Peconic Bay Medical Center opening this month to the planned groundbreaking of the Petrocelli Advanced Surgical Pavilion at North Shore University Hospital this spring and the ongoing transformation of Southside Hospital into a regional destination for top-notch care on the south shore. We will continue to work with our Upper East Side neighbors and city agencies to develop a plan that will enable us to move forward with the redevelopment of Lenox Hill Hospital.
In what ways will ambulatory care fuel future growth?
At Northwell, we are well positioned for success in 2020 and beyond, based on the continued maturation of the clinical, academic and research enterprise the health system has built over its 28-year history. Beyond our 23 hospitals, the health system now has 744 outpatient locations – and we’ll have 786 by the end of this year, including:
- 21 additional primary care practices (increasing the number of practices to 239);
- 23 additional specialty centers, including seven more kidney dialysis centers (increasing the number of centers to 18);
- two additional outpatient cancer centers, including one in Eastern Long Island and another on Staten Island;
- three additional urgent care centers (increasing the number of urgent care centers to 55); and
- two additional ambulatory surgery centers (increasing the number of ambulatory surgery centers to 18).
Due to our ambulatory patient expansion, it’s noteworthy that Northwell’s revenues, projected at $13.5 billion in 2020, will be a 50-50 split between inpatient and outpatient. By comparison, the inpatient/outpatient revenue split was 70-30 percent in 2005.
The recent addition of Concorde Medical Group in Manhattan and its 23 physicians) and clinical affiliations with two large private physician practices, CareMount Medical and AdvantageCare Physicians, further expands our reach into the communities we serve.
How will the Presidential election impact health care?
If the last decade of health care reform and regulation are any guide, then the outcome of the 2020 President race promises to bring more changes to the industry in the coming years. Regardless of what party controls the White House and Congress, health care will receive more than its share of government scrutiny.
Meeting our patients’ needs poses a whole other set of challenges in this uncertain regulatory environment. On the business side, providers are relying to a much greater degree on government payers like Medicare and Medicaid, as relationships with commercial payers continue to become more complex. On top of all that, there’s a growing push from the federal government for increased transparency, with a push toward greater value, cost containment and increased access to care.
Most importantly, we’ll continue to stand by our values. While it may be coincidental, one week after hosting our first Northwell Health Gun Violence Prevention Forum in December and pledging $1 million toward research, prevention, education and advocacy efforts to combat gun violence, Congress approved $25 million in funding for gun safety research – the first time in a quarter century that it has allocated funds for that purpose.
Why is developing and retaining talented employees important to the health of the organization?
To succeed in this environment requires providers to be adaptable, flexible and entrepreneurial. You need to be comfortable dealing with ambiguity, while relying on a progressive culture and a strong talent base. Educating and empowering our employees along their professional journey is personally important to me, but also essential for the long-term success of the health system.
That’s why Northwell created the Center for Learning and Innovation, rebuilt the foundation of the health system upon its own medical school, the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, as well as the Hofstra Northwell School of Graduate Nursing and Physician Assistant Studies. These and other educational opportunities allow Northwell and its workforce to grow and stay ahead of the competition in a fast-moving industry.
As health care providers, we also have an obligation to not only treat people when they’re sick or injured, but to promote healthy lifestyles and help people avoid getting sick in the first place. We’ve made concerted efforts to think about the communities we serve in a holistic way. That means gaining a better understanding of the social determinants of health that have caused significant disparities in life expectancy in our most-vulnerable communities, where chronic disease is prevalent. We’re responding to those needs by pursuing problem-solving solutions, whether it’s providing access to fresh produce and nutritious meals through our hospital-based “Food as Health” program, educating people about the importance of HIV testing and Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) medication for at-risk populations, or training community-based health workers to help local residents adopt and maintain healthy behaviors. It’s all part of our mission to improve the health of the communities we serve.
Meet Edie, a U.S. Marine and now a full-time administration support assistant at Northwell Health

Edie Argueta is an administration support assistant (ASA) at Nassau Queens Pulmonary Associates in New Hyde Park, NY, who helps facilitate a smooth check-in of all patients and guests entering the facility. Not only is Edie responsible for making sure everyone is processed correctly, and their insurances are active, but he is also tasked in posting payments and acting as an agent for the call center.
When Edie joined the U.S. Marines right after he graduated high school, he held the title of motor transport operator and was in charge of driving the military truck on missions. Over the course of his military career, he was deployed twice to Iraq where he was a part of the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit. He was assigned to the 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion of the 2nd Marine Division, based at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. This experience taught Edie the importance of teamwork and persistence, in which he accredits his successful transition to a civilian career at Northwell.
At Northwell, Edie expressed that what he loves most about his job is, “there are always new challenges to overcome and new things to learn. I find my role very satisfying because every day I have the chance to help someone,” says Edie. One thing that motivates Edie is when patients express their gratitude and he’s able to see the impact he’s made on their lives. He attributes his work ethic to his time spent in the military, “My military experience has made a huge impact on setting me up for success in my career at Northwell. It has provided me with the discipline I need to stay focused.”
Our administrative teams are involved with every aspect of a patient’s visit. Being detail orientated and excellent at multitasking are two critical traits we look for in potential candidates for this role. Serving in the U.S. Marines taught Edie these skills among many other disciplines plus a sense of teamwork that has shaped him into the Health Raiser he is today.

We’re elevating the culinary experience

Five Northwell Health hospitals are competing for a chance to be named the winner of the 2019 Chefs Challenge on May 23rd. Tasked with cooking a healthy and nutritious meal, each team will have 90 minutes to prepare a one-of-a-kind meal with a salmon appetizer, filet mignon entree, and an apple dessert. Each team will have three chefs and one certified dietitian who will work together to prepare a meal for guest judges. Meet the teams competing at the Chefs Challenge!
The Southside Hospital team is excited to be able to cook healthy, high-end restaurant quality food that they serve in our hospitals. They are also looking forward to seeing the variety of creative healthy dishes being prepared and presented by the other culinary teams.

A recipe for culinary success — Northern Westchester wins Northwell Health’s 2021 Chefs Challenge

Each year at Northwell Health, we host the Chefs Challenge, where our chefs and their team members collaborate and create unique, healthy dishes that may be offered to their patients in the near future.
This year six Northwell Health hospitals recently competed in the 2021 Chefs Challenge at Glen Cove Hospital. Chefs, cooks and registered dieticians assembled to prepare healthy and delicious three-course meals within five hours — and using an assigned set of ingredients, in the style of an Iron Chef competition!
Northern Westchester Hospital was awarded first place in the competition. The winning menu included a butternut squash and shrimp wonton appetizer; entrée of braised lamb osso buco (shank) with spring vegetables, Yukon gold potato and slow-roasted cherry tomato; and caramelized pineapple upside-down cake dessert. South Shore University Hospital placed second, with a menu featuring butternut squash noodles carbonara, and Lenox Hill Hospital, whose meal included an herb and pistachio crusted rack of lamb, placed third.
Why join our culinary team?
When people consider hospital dishes, they usually don’t picture restaurant-quality three–course meals. Northwell Health believes in redefining hospital food because food is medicine, and our culinary departments strive to provide patients with the same level of nutritional care as the clinical care they receive altogether.
Our culinary department and chefs raise the standard of hospital food by designing meals with fresh ingredients, including herbs and vegetables harvested from Northwell Health’s gardens. Northern Westchester donates food from its recently opened wellness garden to discharged patients leaving who are food insecure or vulnerable, while Lenox Hill’s Victory Greens garden is New York City’s only hospital-based, organic rooftop garden.
In addition, our teaching kitchens partner chefs and registered dietitians together to share healthy recipes, basic culinary skills and nutrition education with team members and patients.

Making a Difference Through the Power of Food

Michael Ufholz had many years of experience as a chef in the restaurant industry before joining our culinary team at Northwell Health in 2019. Today, as the executive sous chef at Peconic Bay Medical Center (PBMC) in Riverhead, New York, he takes pride helping to heal our patients in a different way—with food and nutrition.
When you think of hospitals, nutritious and restaurant-quality food may not be top of mind, but at Northwell, preparing delicious and healthy dishes for our patients is one of our highest priorities. At Northwell, we believe innovation is the key ingredient in promoting wellness and is essential to transforming the healthcare culinary experience for our patients and our team members.
Michael is proud of the work he does and the team he has built at PBMC. With a sense of devotion and passion in all that he does, Michael knows that creating a positive impact on each patient’s food experience is vital to his success. It is the positive impact on his patients and having the ability to improve their experience that led Michael to want to work for Northwell Health.
“If you’re ready to make meals from the heart, this is your place to be,” said Michael. “Food tastes better when it’s made from the heart, and that’s what Northwell’s culinary teams do.”
It all begins with the culinary team in the kitchen each day. Michael’s daily responsibilities include selecting the daily menu for our patients and providing training to our team members, such as teaching cooking techniques. Michael also assists in the management of the cafeteria and catering functions, in addition to preparing all food items appropriate for each meal including starters, entrees, side dishes and more.
Michael believes that making a good quality meal for patients is the most rewarding part of his job. For instance, if a patient is worried about an upcoming test or procedure, a meal prepared by Michael and Northwell’s culinary team can make them feel calmer and more at ease.
“I’m able to see firsthand the impact our culinary team has on our patients,” said Michael. “Our teams work hard to produce the best meals for our patients, and it truly pays off by making our patients happy.”
Michael loves that his current position with Northwell allows him to have a healthy work/life balance. When working in the restaurant industry, it was common for Michael to be at the restaurant into the late hours multiple days a week. Now at Northwell, Michael’s team works just as hard but with flexible shifts to ensure they have time to balance a full-time career with their families at home. This makes a huge difference in his life as he shares, “I used to feel like I lived at work and now I live to truly experience life.” With a flexible schedule, Michael believes Northwell has allowed him to have the opportunity to get even more crafty with his cooking — being creative with recipes that he could possibly add to PBMC’s menu.
Michael feels supported to grow and develop at Northwell. He also welcomes the camaraderie with his fellow culinary teams at our other hospitals with Northwell’s annual chef challenge competition, where each hospital’s culinary team competes to create a three-course-meal for a panel of judges.

One of the many ways Northwell supports the well-being of our team members is through our annual Go for the Gold Paris Movement Challenge. Each year, our Team Member Wellness team features a different destination to help employees learn more about different locations throughout the world. This year was unique because instead of highlighting a specific country as a destination, the team highlighted the venues of the Paris Olympic games. In 2024, more than 3,500 teams made up of 19,100+ team members competed in the challenge. Each team of up to six colleagues had six weeks to walk approximately two million steps collectively to reach the final Olympic venue. Ten teams overall were selected – such as the CLI Steppin’ Squad and the Hot Chili Steppers, among the rest — with each participant receiving a $5,000 prize.
This initiative motivates team members to build in movement while working as a team. The encouragement to stay active and make healthier choices has a ripple effect, inspiring family and friends to join in and help motivate our participants. Team members are incentivized to get active not only by tracking steps with a wearable device, but by leveraging an app for tracking healthier habits, like a device-free bedtime routine and drinking enough water daily.

- Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Driver’s license valid in New York State must be current and without violations.
- Current NYS DOH EMT certification.
- Must meet the criteria for NYS DOH functional description for qualifications, competencies, and tasks (EMT, BLS, DLD).
- One to three (1-3) years of relevant experience is preferred.
Medical Assistant
Medical assistants perform patient care under the physician and nurse’s direct supervision. Their duties include preparing each patient for the physician and administering, obtaining and recording diagnostic laboratory test results. They may also assist in coordinating care to meet patient needs including preparing, organizing and filing reports into the medical record.
- Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Requires successful completion of one of the following:
- Medical assisting program at an accredited school.
- One to three (1-3) years of medical assistant experience.
- One to three (1-3) years of emergency medical technician experience with current New York State DOH EMT certification.

Registered Nurse
Registered nurses perform an age specific plan of care for a designated group of patients using the nursing process of assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care. They collaborate with physicians and other team members in coordinating and implementing procedures and treatments. They also use leadership skills and clinical judgment in coordinating patient care while directing and delegating activities of the patient care unit team.
- Requires graduate from an accredited school of nursing.
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing is preferred.
- Must be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within two (2) years and obtain a BSN degree within five (5) years of job entry date.

Meet Jennifer, Physical Therapist, Goal Setter and Health Raiser

Jennifer Langenberg knew she wanted to work for Northwell after completing her clinical rotation at Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation Services (STARS) Manhasset in 2018. A year later, on her birthday, that goal was achieved when she began her journey as a full-time Health Raiser in September of 2019.
As a physical therapist (PT), Jennifer specializes in helping patients with injuries and chronic health conditions to help them regain their range of motion, manage pain and improve their quality of life. She is not only involved in restorative care, but also in educating patients on general wellness, staying active and preventing future injuries. She works closely with colleagues to discuss treatment ideas, best practices and ways to help accommodate patients with challenging schedules to smoothly coordinate their care. “Even as a student, I knew the quality of care at Northwell surpassed any place I had ever worked before,” says Jennifer, “I was so impressed by not only the structure of the STARS clinics, but by how happy both the patients and staff seemed to be.”
During her student internship at STARS, Jennifer saw the opportunity for success at Northwell. “Northwell as an organization is always expanding and changing, offering all team members countless opportunities to develop and grow,” shared Jennifer. “My leaders take a genuine interest in each employee by supporting continuing education at the Center for Learning and Innovation, mentorship programs and more.”
A major part of Jennifer’s role as a PT is getting to know her patients, finding out what is most important to them and designing a plan to reach their mutual goals. “I feel so fortunate to not only work with such wonderful patients, but also colleagues who make the day brighter because we have the same genuine interest in providing the best care for our patients.”
In 2022, Jennifer was awarded “Employee of the Quarter,” where she was ranked as the highest performing team member for all of Northwell’s STARS Rehabilitation sites, from July 2022 to September 2022. With over 20 locations system-wide and recognized as a Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Clinical Quality Exceptional Performer, STARS Rehabilitation operates in a collaborative team environment across all rehab disciplines with our physician partners at Northwell Health. Jennifer attributes her successful three years at Northwell to being patient with herself as she hones her skills, setting achievable goals, and allowing herself to learn and grow at her own pace. “I am proud of not only the work I do, but the behavior and lifestyle modification this field elicits in others. It is so important to help people understand, they are in control of their outcomes and success.”

Growing a career as a leader at Northwell Health

For Nirva Matteis the key to success at Northwell Health has always been an eagerness to learn and grow. During her 10-year career here, Nirva has worked in multiple jobs and locations throughout the organization and has gained experience that has led her to become the senior administrative manager for the Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery and Communicative Disorders at the Hearing and Speech Center.
As senior administrative manager, Nirva is responsible for the daily administrative operations of a multi- physician practice along with managing all non-clinical personnel and supporting revenue cycle, quality and service excellence initiatives. Excelling today as a leader, Nirva started her Northwell career as a food service worker at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) while obtaining her undergraduate education.
Growing at Northwell Health
From the beginning, Nirva has utilized a variety of different opportunities that Northwell provides to support her professional development. Classes at Northwell’s The Center for Learning and Innovation (CLI) were an endless resource for her to learn new skills and participated in their Applied Leadership Effectiveness and Development Program which is a one-year program that is designed to develop skills and knowledge among current and emerging leaders. In addition, she also benefitted from Northwell’s tuition reimbursement program and earned her master’s degree.
But one of the biggest assets to helping her grow at Northwell has always been her mentors. “I have grown by leaps and bounds both professionally and personally as a direct result of my mentors ,” says Nirva. “Northwell does a fantastic job with encouraging team members to seek bigger and better opportunities within the organization. For that, I am eternally grateful.” From working on the Food & Nutrition team at NSUH to becoming a supervisor within the System Call Center, Nirva receives advice from her mentors that helped her flourish.
It was through her mentors and experience at the System Call Center that Nirva found out about the opportunity to work on the Otolaryngology team after falling in love with the way their work was improving lives. “Fielding thousands of calls for head and neck surgery and cochlear implant patients allowed me to gain insight on the challenges people face when dealing with life-changing diagnoses,” says Nirva. “My ability to empathize to create a memorable experience as a result catapulted.”
In addition, Northwell’s commitment to health equity and access to care for all members of the communities we serve is something Nirva feels strongly about. She feels she can make an impact in her current role in a patient-facing setting.

As Nirva continues to grow her own career, she also has the unique experience of being able to help others follow in her footsteps. How Holly grew her career and her family with the help of Northwell Health

At Northwell Health, Holly Wagner has found both professional and personal support. As her career grew throughout her nine years here, so has her family – thanks, in part, to Northwell’s fertility benefits.
Holly’s professional growth began when she first joined Northwell in 2012. That’s when the private practice she worked at as a medical assistant became one of the Northwell Health Physician Partners. She became a senior medical assistant in 2015 and through her hard work and dedication, she was able to grow into a new role as a coordinator of administrative operations for the Medicine Service Line in 2018. Two years later, she was promoted again into her current role of associate product services and management analyst with the Soarian Support team.
In her current role, Holly supports the system’s needs with Soarian, a clinical software that helps with patient scheduling. The team is not only responsible for helping to set up new providers or locations as they join the organization but they also create all schedule templates and support patient scheduling needs.
“The support to grow my career path within Northwell has been amazing,” says Holly. “When I worked at the practice level, I was involved in some quality projects which helped me gain contacts and when the coordinator position opened, my manager recommended me. The director of the medicine service line was talking to me about the position within hours of me showing interest.”
This investment in Holly’s development has continued to follow her throughout her career as she moved into a position she had never imagined herself doing – but her leadership did. “Throughout my roles, my leadership has always pushed me to advance my career, even if it meant looking for growth in a new position outside my department. I can’t thank all of the people Northwell has brought into my life enough for this.”
Beyond her professional growth, Holly also experienced personal growth as a result of the many benefits that Northwell offers, taking advantage of what she feels are some of the best health benefits out there. “For me personally, as I am in a same sex marriage and the health insurance benefits have helped me grow my family,” says Holly. “My son is going to be two this May and it was with the help of Northwell Health Fertility at Smithtown that we were able to have him via IUI (intrauterine insemination).”

Most of these doctors appointments can be done before work hours but you are going through a lot during these times,” says Holly. “I would not have been able to go through my first pregnancy if it wasn’t for the team of people I worked with. I am currently starting to go back to try for baby number two and couldn’t be more thrilled!”

Katie Burns, senior medical assistant for Cohen Children’s Northwell Health Physician Partners Pediatric Surgical Specialists in Staten Island, also appreciates working closer to home and describes her professional growth and development with Northwell as fulfilling and life changing. “I have grown professionally throughout my time here at Northwell by taking on new challenges whenever they arise. As a medical assistant, many of my scoliosis surgical and bracing patients are young adolescents. Helen Ruiz is a practice lead administrative support coordinator at Staten Island University Hospital South, Cardiology Department. Her role encompasses making sure that the physician at her practice has everything he needs to provide the best experience and care for our patients. “Working at Northwell Health in Staten Island has been extremely rewarding for me. My day begins with an easy commute and continues at a job where I am constantly learning new things and meeting great people who are very dedicated to their work. Meet Wendell, Avid Learner, Licensed Practical Nurse, and Health Raiser

As a licensed practical nurse (LPN) at Stern Family Center for Rehabilitation in Manhasset, New York, Wendell loves that he is constantly learning in his role and is always equipped with all the necessary tools to ensure success. As an LPN, Wendell is responsible for providing nursing care to patients as directed by physicians. He also observes, conducts, and documents an assessment of a patient’s medical condition throughout the entirety of their treatment.
Wendell started his career at Northwell Health as a certified nursing assistant at Stern Family Center for Rehabilitation in 2020. With the help of Northwell’s tuition assistance, he went back to school to become a licensed practical nurse. Wendell is incredibly proud that he successfully completed school through this program. This accomplishment showed him that anything is possible when you put your mind to it. Following graduation, Wendell worked as a licensed practical nurse at Stern Family Center for Rehabilitation and has been in this role since 2023.
In this role, Wendell has also been able to maintain an excellent work-life balance. As a result of his flexible work schedule, Wendell is able to explore interests and hobbies unique to him, and successfully balance his success at work and his passions at home.

Administrative Support Assistant
As an administrative support assistant, you will perform various clerical duties related to the operational needs of the office/department.
- Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Requires one to three years of relevant experience.
From an administrative support assistant, you can grow into a project manager by obtaining a bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and related work experience. You can also receive tuition reimbursement as you continue toward becoming a project manager.
Project Manager (PM)
Our project managers plan, manage and coordinate project activities to ensure goals and objectives are accomplished within their timeframe and funding limits. They establish timelines and ensure project deadlines are met while maintaining integrity and cost containment of projects.
- Requires bachelor’s degree, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Requires one to three years of relevant experience.
- Specialized certifications, such as a PMP certification, and additional skills may be needed.
After receiving relevant management experience as a PM, you can grow into a manager of operations role.
Manager, Operations
Manages the daily administrative operations of a multi-physician, single/multiple practice(s) for a division or program. Coordinates administrative functions, plans and supports development of the site/joint division programs and all related areas. Manages all personnel and maintains accurate and current files on all department budgets, capital equipment requests and programs related to operational issues.
- Requires bachelor’s degree, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Requires six to eight years of relevant experience and two to five years of leadership/management experience.
Meet Gina, Operating Room Registered Nurse, Achiever, and Health Raiser

As an operating room registered nurse at South Shore University Hospital (SSUH), Gina Gaussaint loves being able to help our patients in the most critical moments of their health journey. In her role, Gina helps organize and deliver patient care by assessing patients, making diagnoses, plus planning and fulfilling procedures. Using her leadership skills, Gina is also responsible for assigning tasks and setting goals for her team to achieve.
Gina started her career with Northwell Health in 2004 as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at South Shore University Hospital (formerly Southside Hospital). With the financial support of Northwell’s tuition reimbursement program, Gina went back to school to become a registered nurse and earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) in 2015. Following graduation, Gina worked as a medical/surgical telemetry registered nurse at SSUH for 17 years, until she decided she wanted to try something different. She took a leap into continuing her education further and applied for a fellowship for operating room nursing at Northwell. In 2021, Gina completed her fellowship and today, she works in SSUH’s perioperative department as a registered nurse.
Gina considers the operating room to be a very collaborative environment where she is able to hone her current skills and learn new ones. She is glad that each person knows how important each individual is in the OR and how it takes an entire team to have successful, life-saving outcomes. “It is such a big deal that I am able to help save somebody’s life,” said Gina. “It is just so fulfilling to know that you helped someone.”

Gina speaks often about the impact her perioperative nurse educators and team members have had on her life and career. She shares how they are a very hardworking, dedicated group who are very supportive of her endeavors both in the operating room and in her personal life. Throughout her career at Northwell, she has always felt supported by her leaders and grateful for a strong work/life balance. Things like shift flexibility, if needed, ensured she never missed any of her children’s major milestones, including birthdays, anniversaries, award ceremonies and more.
At Northwell, our perioperative services team delivers innovative surgical procedures with precision and purpose. With numerous awards and new surgery centers opening, our team is growing with opportunities to gain new skills and experience. When asked about her professional journey with Northwell Health and her future within the health system, Gina replied, “I work for the best health system.” She continued, “This is where I will retire – I absolutely love it here.”

Food Service Assistant
Food service assistants perform several tasks relating to the preparation and service of food, delivery and collection of food and supplies and appropriate operation of machinery. These team members also assist in sanitizing specific areas of the department.
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Requires one (1) to three (3) years of relevant experience.
As you move along your career path from a food service assistant, you can grow into a dietetic technician by continuing your education in nutrition or dietetics with an associate’s degree at an accredited university. You can also receive tuition reimbursement while you continue your education.
Dietetic Technician
Dietetic technicians assist in screening patients at nutritional risk. Under supervision, they modify daily menus in accordance with a patient’s diet prescription, implement a nutrition care plan and provide consultation to patient and family, as directed. They also document a patient’s nutritional screening and assessment information.
- Requires an associate’s degree in nutrition or dietetics.
- Requires one (1) to three (3) years of relevant experience.
If you are interested in transitioning from a dietetic technician to a registered dietician, your next step is to attain your bachelor’s degree and certification.
Registered Dietician
Registered dieticians are responsible for nutritional care of patients in assigned units. They plan, assess, implement and evaluate patient nutritional care plans while also assisting in menu modifications and other nutritional related functions.
Requires a bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Requires current registered dietitian certification with the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
- Certified Dietitian Nutritionist in New York State (CDN), as needed.
- Advanced/specialized certifications, as needed.
Requires one (1) to three (3) years of relevant experience.
