Celebrating Medical Assistants Recognition Week at Northwell Health

Our medical assistant (MA) team members are an integral part of the patient experience. While assisting patients under the supervision of our physicians and nurses, our MA team members take the lead on multiple tasks for the patient from visit preparation to administering, obtaining and recording diagnostic laboratory test results to preparing and filing reports into a patient’s medical records. We interviewed a few of our amazing medical assistants — Natasha, Miriam and Cassandra — to discuss how their career and professional development has been supported at Northwell.

Tell us about your current role and what responsibilities you have as a medical assistant.

Cassandra Denis, Medical Assistant, Neurosurgery: I joined Northwell in 2020. Joining the Northwell team was one of the best transitions and accomplishments I made for my career. My responsibilities include assisting the clinicians and nurse practitioners by bringing patients to their exam rooms, checking blood pressure and reviewing their history and medications. I am also responsible for answering phone calls and booking appointments, scanning documents into patient charts and prepping for the next office hours.

Miriam Edwards, Senior Medical Assistant, Cardiology: I became part of the Northwell team when my office was acquired in 2008. As a medical assistant, I am responsible for preparing patients to meet with the cardiologist. This includes interviewing them to get their medical history, completing vitals and EKGs, completing stress tests, applying Holter monitors and acting as a patient navigator to help them through their visit.

Natasha Benn, Medical Assistant, General Pediatrics: I joined Northwell in 2012. As a medical assistant I assist providers in taking vitals, performing tests, prepping the room prior to a patient’s visit and disinfecting afterwards. I also scan and work on paperwork related to school, camp and medications forms and medical records, as well as work on administrative tasks.

How has your growth and development been supported by Northwell?

CD: Northwell has supported my growth and development in many ways. I am eager to learn from different departments while continuing to care for my patients with love, compassion and patience. Northwell has helped me grow my professional network and has given me the opportunity to cross train and learn so that I can grow as a medical assistant. Northwell always finds new ways to help their employees to progress in their career journey.

ME: Northwell has been excellent for career development. I feel supported in my goals, development, and work-life balance. I have even taken several classes to enhance my skills as a medical assistant.

NB: Northwell has given me opportunities to gain experience at other facilities and has given me opportunities to learn. I am now more aware and capable in dealing with difficult scenarios and situations when it comes to the health and care of our patients.

What do you love about your job at Northwell?

CD: What I love about Northwell and the department that I work for is that we are like a family. We treat each other with the utmost respect. My team is always willing to help each other through stressful times and find ways to do our best to make sure our patients leave their appointments happy and informed.

ME: Northwell has a great team atmosphere where I feel supported by the doctors and my team members. We each bring something different to the table and all come together to provide the best patient care.

NB: As Northwell team members we have opportunities to gain experience, information and knowledge by taking on different roles. I also love the diversity and culture that we are exposed to.

What do you think about when you hear “Medical Assistants Recognition Week?”

CD: I think about the love and appreciation the medical assistant team members will be shown for our dedication and hard work toward our patients and their needs. I see it as a week where we will be recognized for all that we do and a great way for others to learn more about the position and what we do on a daily basis.

ME: I’m extremely excited about Medical Assistants Recognition Week. It fills me with pride to know that I work with an organization and team that shows appreciation for my hard work. I feel a sense of pride and belonging, which further ignites my drive to bring my best every day!

NB: Medical Assistants Recognition Week is a time for appreciating the efforts and hard work a team member has contributed to their role for their team, patient and site. The week is about how their dedication and zeal affected a patient, team member, workflow, or environment in a positive way. The week also makes me think about the hard work that doesn’t go unnoticed. It makes us feel heard, seen and valued. Everything that we do when we go above and beyond overall seems worth it; though we don’t necessarily do it to be recognized, but we do it because we want to and we love what we do.­

Providing the Foundation for Success for Care Coordination Professionals

At Northwell, we understand the powerful impact behind providing our team with the right training and education so they can perform at their best. Our registered nurse case managers and social workers have unique access to our dedicated education team who provide one-of-a-kind effective training programs from onboarding orientation to leadership education to give our team members the foundation they need for continued growth and development. With continued education and training, our RN case managers and social workers have the skills and tools they need beyond the bedside to succeed in their roles within the care coordination field of practice.

Learn more about the benefits our Care Coordination team members have access to including our talented clinical professional development educators and education advisors. These education professional, leverage their experience and backgrounds to create education and training programs that enable our Care Coordination team members to develop and grow their careers.

Our Care Coordination educators develop and create the following training and education programs for registered nurses and licensed social workers to succeed in their roles:

  • Orientation and onboarding of new team members
  • Development of independent learning, self-study programs in conjunction with instructor-led classes
  • Curriculum development for new case managers, social workers, leaders, and support staff
  • Continuing education programs for all team members with speakers on specific topics
  • Access to various tools and resources to support ongoing learning

Through these programs, RN case managers and social workers become advocates for their patients so they are always well prepared to find a solution and treatment option that best works for each situation so patients can heal.

Caryn Stapler, RN, MBA, CCM, says, “We provide a solid standardized program and foundations for success for new hires and every Care Coordination team member across all our (inpatient) sites.” After a career in financial services for more than 20 years, Caryn went back to school to earn a nursing degree before starting at Northwell in 2008 as a registered nurse in Telemetry. She worked as a patient experience coordinator, case manager and today, Caryn is a clinical professional development educator for our Care Coordination team who creates new education programs for registered nurse case managers.

Our Care Coordination education team provides support to our frontline team members. They develop curriculums and schedules for key learning areas within the division for registered nurses, and also develop our mentorship program for rising leaders within Care Coordination. As Northwell continues to evolve and expand, our nurse educators also oversee education affiliation and student programs within the discipline. Heather Gordon, RN, BSN, CCM, clinical professional development educator, is currently involved in a new preliminary initiative that will provide nursing students with experience and exposure in the field of case management. “The education team works collaboratively with unique skill sets and experienced nurses to expand and meet the needs of the care coordination strategic initiatives,” says Heather. Heather’s career history is deeply rooted at Northwell Health. She started at as a nursing assistant, then became a registered nurse in the neonatal intensive care unit. From there, Heather became a case manager in 2007 at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset. With Heather’s vast experience and dedication, this position lead to her promotion as director of case management and social work in 2019 and then to her current role.

Providing care coordination to those needing assistance requires dedication and drive. Zairia Finch, LCSW-R, MS, advisor, social work services, is responsible for the development and implementation of educational programs and opportunities for our social workers at Northwell Health. Zairia leads the creation of orientation material and competencies, oversees continuing education, provides ongoing learning, and partners collaboratively with other disciplines outside of Social Work Services to further develop interdisciplinary approaches to care. She works to incorporate best practices and innovative solutions to social work specific areas of practice.

Zairia’s social work experience brought her to Northwell eight years ago. “Being a champion of social work and being able to build the social work services education programs, I can see the impact we have on our team members across the health system in providing them with additional education and training,” says Zairia. This exceptional educational training enables social workers to perform their best and succeed within our care settings. In addition, Zairia supports the highly successful MSW Student Program throughout Northwell.

The benefits of working in care coordination includes being able to provide ongoing patient advocacy, supporting positive patient experiences, providing safe discharge plans, and ensuring a seamless transition for our patients across the continuum of care.

With a passion for caring and continued growth, meet Certified Surgical Technologist, Jason Dizon

Meet Jason Dizon, certified surgical technologist at Plainview Hospital. Jason’s passion for learning helps him grow and succeed in his career journey at Northwell.

As a certified surgical technologist, Jason works in the operating room where he sets up for each surgical procedure, assists the operating room team, and maintains the sterility of the instruments to ensure patient safety. Working alongside our surgeons and the surgical team, Jason is constantly learning new things that will provide superior care for his patients. Since Plainview is also a teaching hospital, Jason has opportunities to teach students who are in school to become certified surgical technologists.

Jason is proud to be a part of a dynamic work environment with state-of-the-art surgical equipment. Since joining Northwell in 2015, he tries to make a difference every day for his patients with the support of his team members. “I love that my work enables me to help people,” he says. “The team I work with supports me and makes me better every day.”

With his passion for caring, learning new things and supportive encouragement from his managers, Jason is now looking to pursue a nursing career in the next step of his journey with the financial support of tuition reimbursement from Northwell. “I’m excited about the future and the prospect of becoming an OR nurse, as my management team fully supports me going back to school.”

When asked what advice he has for those looking to start a career as a surgical technologist, Jason shared, “Know that we do not just pass instruments to the surgeon. We help make our patients feel better and improve their quality of life, which is why I love my job.”

We had the opportunity to speak with some of Northwell’s past IT interns about their journey to a full-time career at Northwell. Our Information Technology & Services (IT&S) team plays a critical role in our ability to deliver exceptional care for our patients and our community. Through our IT Internship program, student interns can prepare for success as an IT professional, while playing a key role in helping us advance IT solutions in strategic planning, deployment, coordination, and integration throughout our organization.

Meet some team members whose career journeys started from our IT Internship program.

Giovanni Ocampo, Senior Infrastructure Services and Management Engineer

Giovanni’s career journey began with Northwell in 2017, when he joined us as a summer intern for the IT security department. During his internship, he was inspired by the encouragement he received from management to pursue his current role within our cellular department as a senior infrastructure services and management engineer, supporting cellular/corporate lines and radio/network router projects.

Today, Giovanni has many accomplishments to be proud of. One of which was the company-wide deployment of our mobile device management (MDM) system, in which securely connected mobile devices (such as smartphones and tablets) are provided for use throughout the health system. “I love the teamwork that occurs on big projects at Northwell,” says Giovanni. “We work with so many different teams and departments and to see all of us come together to reach an end goal successfully is truly amazing.”

Rebecca Logan, Project Manager, Departmental Clinical Solutions

Since she started as an IT project associate intern in 2017, Rebecca shared that she was drawn to Northwell because she knew it would give her the opportunity to work in a collaborative environment with supportive leadership.

Today, Rebecca is a project manager on the clinical solutions team, implementing surgical information systems at Lenox Hill Hospital and Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital. Since the start of this assignment, Rebecca has gained more confidence in her ability to tackle challenges and find solutions because she is constantly learning and growing within her role. Once completed, Rebecca is eager to take on more of these complex projects. “I really enjoy that every day is different and that my leaders have always helped me reach my goals.” She also added, “I believe it is very important to be transparent and persistent about your goals throughout your career journey, but also to recognize that teamwork truly makes the dream work.”

Redefining food in healthcare – Northwell Health’s 2022 Chefs Challenge sparks culinary innovation

At Northwell, we stand behind the belief that food is medicine and a little competition can spark culinary innovation. At this year’s annual Chefs Challenge event, hosted at Glen Cove Hospital, our culinary teams competed for the chance to create a healthy, delicious meal that may be prepared for future patients at Northwell hospitals across our organization.

Each team, comprised of our chefs, cooks, and registered dieticians, had 90 minutes to present a healthy and enticing three-course meal to the judges. In its 11th year, Northwell had the honor of hosting best-selling cookbook author and Emmy-award winning TV host, Lidia Bastianich, as one of our celebrity guest judges.

“First, I’m amazed at the quality of food that’s being tasted here. Secondly, that this food is being served to patients in Northwell hospitals in big numbers,”* Lidia Bastianich said.

The first prize was awarded to the team from Peconic Bay Medical Center, whose winning dishes included: a chilled English pea soup with goat cheese panna cotta for an appetizer, a deconstructed seafood stew as the main entrée, and a raspberry yogurt mousse for dessert. Coming in second place was Syosset Hospital and in third place was Northern Westchester Hospital.

Bruno Tiso, vice president of Northwell’s food services and corporate executive chef, shared, “This annual event is where we confirm our commitment to redefining food in healthcare. Not only does it allow us to get together to share ideas, new techniques, and new dishes, it also allows us to showcase how we are transforming hospital food.”*

A Passion for Caring: Meet Melodie, Home Care Registered Nurse

The care that patients receive during their hospital stays is critical, but for many, follow-up treatment after discharge is just as important in their recovery. For Melodie Quimpo, one of Northwell’s Home Care Registered Nurses, providing compassionate, professional care to her patients in the comfort of their own environments isn’t just a job—it’s a passion.

“I love that I have the privilege to promote the health of patients and their family members in the place where people feel most at ease – their home,” says Melodie, a member of the Northwell Health at Home team within the Continuing Care division, which includes nurses, physical and occupational therapists, social workers and more.

As a home care nurse, Melodie takes on a multitude of roles, assessing patients’ needs, educating them on medication, coordinating doctors’ appointments, and referring them to a variety of rehabilitation and social services. “Overall, my role is to help my patients recover and encourage them to manage their own health goals to achieve safe independence,” she says.

While being a home care nurse at Northwell offers many work-life balance benefits—for example, flexibility and autonomy in their daily schedules—what Melodie loves most about her job is knowing that the warm and personalized care she provides is instrumental in the healing process. It’s this and the ability to build meaningful relationships with her patients and their families that makes her career so rewarding.

“Just hearing a patient and their loved one express their gratitude for my visits reminds me that I am making a true difference in someone’s life,” says Melodie. “This memory motivates me to continue my passion in nursing.”

Melodie’s enthusiasm about her role at Northwell is also sparked by the many growth opportunities afforded to her.

“If an RN wants to advance their skills or education, Northwell provides them with the tools they need to succeed,” she says. “In my experience, the managers and leadership team have encouraged me to further my knowledge in the most up-to-date clinical nursing care by providing training and continuing education opportunities.”

In addition, though she works one-on-one with her patients, Melodie knows that her colleagues are always there to help her be the best nurse she can be.

“Northwell has always had a positive reputation for teamwork, and I wanted to be a part of an inclusive work environment,” she says. “To this day, I have been able to work collaboratively with home care staff to provide quality patient care.”

Emanuel Remilus, assistant nurse manager of the Pediatric ICU at Cohen Children’s Medical Center and member of the Northwell Health Nurse Choir, credits his time participating in our Entry to Leadership Mentor program with enabling him to enter the management ranks. “I was fortunate enough to have a mentor who I respect and admire, who I could turn to for help,” says Emanuel. “Throughout the program, I was provided a structured experience with actionable steps and attainable goals. My mentor was able to provide helpful tips to help make the job more manageable, and she continues to be a great source of help to this day.”

Emanuel also credits his fellow nursing community and leadership team at Northwell with constantly challenging him to reach for more. “They saw the potential in me, even before I could see it myself.” With the support and encouragement from his Magnet family behind him, Emanuel was accepted into the Stony Brook University Masters in Nursing Leadership program.

Meghan Strebel – Assistant Nurse Manager, Patient Care, Telemetry

Meghan was a former mentee within the Nursing Entry to Practice Mentorship program in 2019 and today is a mentor in the Nursing Entry to Leadership Mentor program. She knows how valuable the experience is, and she was eager to pay it forward. As a mentor, Meghan advises new graduate nursing students to take advantage of any opportunities that come their way. “Sometimes that means stepping out of your comfort zone, because if it wasn’t for my mentors pushing me to try something new in my life, I would not have the success I have had in the leadership role today.”

In her current role as an assistant nurse manager on the Telemetry unit at Mather Hospital, Meghan recognizes that she would not have been successful if it wasn’t for both of her mentorship programs. “I’ve been fortunate to have amazing leaders during my six years at Northwell who have supported me in pursuing my interests, taking chances, and stretching myself. Each mentorship program has given me the opportunity to grow as a new leader not only within Mather, but within Northwell too.”

Tameika Waite – Project Associate, IT&S Project Management

One of the many ways Northwell lives its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is through the Emerging Leader Diversity Mentorship program. This program provides a forum for diverse individuals to develop an on-going relationship with a mentor by meeting regularly and discussing professional development within an organized and supportive framework. The program aims to increase diversity at all levels of management across the health system.

Having a mentor in this program enabled Tameika Waite, project associate in Information Technology & Services (IT&S), to build connections with “great people” across Northwell and gave her the power to define her career on her own terms. Tameika shared that she is encouraged by the high number of diverse leaders, including women, whom she’s met along the way, motivating her to pursue each successive opportunity. “I can truly say that the support I feel from my managers and leadership here goes beyond measure,” says Tameika. “I work in an environment where my leaders are teachers every day, who are welcoming to new ideas.”

Joseph McMahon – Assistant Vice President, Enterprise Change Management

Through the Neuro Diversity Mentor program, not only are students with disabilities able to gain first-hand insight into healthcare careers, but Northwell team members also gain knowledge to help them understand and support the neuro-diverse community.

Mentor Joseph McMahon, assistant vice president of Enterprise Change Management, meets monthly with his mentee and stays connected with him virtually on a regular basis. “It’s been a pleasure being a part of this program. This experience has expanded my own understanding of our organization’s workforce inclusion strategy overall and I’m helping my mentee learn more about our organization while getting to know him on a personal level so I can help him progress in his career journey.”

When most people think of Northwell Health and its commitment to excellence, they picture doctors, nurses, and other front-line healthcare professionals. But our team members who work behind the scenes in non-clinical roles play an equally important part of our organization.

Here, meet two of our Information Technology & Services (IT&S) team members who found their dream careers at Northwell!

Witti Naval, Senior Agile Coach, Agile Transformation Center

From her first job at Northwell as a project manager in 2015, Witti Naval has never forgotten that that delivering higher quality products and more relevant solutions requires collaboration and innovation. She takes pride in coaching teams to be more adaptive to respond to challenges by developing efficient, flexible, and responsive software that is fundamental to the success of every employee in our organization, whatever their role. Most important, technology ultimately serves to support our main purpose: providing superior care for the patients who have entrusted us with their well-being.

Witti’s decision to join the Northwell team was inspired by personal circumstances. “I had a parent with early onset of Alzheimer’s,” she says, “and it felt comforting to be in healthcare to better deal with elder care challenges.”

The other main reason she chose Northwell as the perfect place to create a meaningful career was because our values mirrored her own. “I have felt connected to our purpose and commitment to technical innovation because it provides my team and I with the flexibility our patients need to manage their healthcare successfully,” says Witti.

As a Senior Agile Coach, Witti supports Northwell’s commitment to Agile methodology and principles such as prioritizing customer satisfaction; engaging non-IT&S staff early and often in the process; welcoming change and supporting IT&S team members during every step of their development.

Agile Transformation is a much larger endeavor than just changing how software gets built; rather, it involves a complete transformation of the entire organization, with the goal of creating a culture that empowers employees and encourages creativity and innovation.

That goal is one that Witti embraces whole-heartedly, as evidenced in her advice to people just starting their careers: “See if your role resonates with your life purpose and then let your purpose guide you on your career journey.”

Anthony Carvino, Senior Software Engineer

Finding a career that enables you to make a powerful difference in people’s lives has also been a driving force for Anthony Carvino, who was drawn to work at Northwell because it gave him the opportunity to build software and tools that directly improve the experience of medical professionals and their patients.

Anthony has been a core contributor to Nora, software that lets clinicians easily navigate a patient’s health records via their technical device, enabling them to access critical information within a matter of seconds—time that can make all the difference in patients’ lives.

Nora uses Natural Language Processing to answer questions instantly, providing clinicians with direct access to lab results, consult notes, imaging, medications, and more, which has been especially critical during the pandemic.

“Nora embodies everything that we want innovation at Northwell to be,” says Anthony. “It employs cutting-edge technology and architecture to build solutions intended to delight our users. ”This innovative technology exceeds traditional clinical software and improves speed while enhancing the clinician and patient experience.

Most recently, Anthony has been leading the architectural and development efforts for a major component of the next generation of Nora, and he is excited to be working on a project that will further improve the benefits of the software to all Northwell stakeholders.

Anthony is proud to be a part of the dynamic and engaging work environment at Northwell. He is glad that he put his passion for helping others into practice in his career, and he advises others to do the same: “Never underestimate the importance of doing impactful and rewarding work when looking to start your career.”

Northwell recognizes two of our extraordinary team members in honor of Autism Acceptance Month

April is National Autism Acceptance Month, and here at Northwell Health, we are dedicated to supporting individuals on the autism spectrum, whether they are members of our staff or the family of our employees.

Our commitment to a diverse workforce that provides a safe and welcoming environment for people with disabilities led to the creation of our N-ABLE BERG (Business Employee Resource Group). The N-ABLE BERG was designed to advocate, educate, and support our employees of all abilities and their families, ensuring everyone has the resources they need and the respect they deserve.

Here, we recognize two of N-ABLE BERG’s members as they share what working at such an inclusive, affirming, and respectful workplace means to them.

Patricia Troiano, Senior Pharmacist at Long Island Jewish Medical Center

Juggling a clinical career while raising a family can be challenging for anyone, but when you are the mother of twin boys on the autism spectrum, finding a supportive work environment is crucial. For 35 years, Patricia Troiano has found that place here at Northwell. As a registered senior pharmacist at Long Island Jewish Medical Center (LIJMC) specializing in sterile compounding and dispensing, Patricia’s role allows her to fulfill prescription orders and provide IV medication to our patients.

A passionate advocate for the autistic population, Patricia says that being part of the N-ABLE BERG this past year and being given the title of Neurodiversity Project Leader in March has given her companionship, comfort, and an opportunity to spread awareness about autism—all crucial to her fulfillment at work and home.

Patricia has also taken advantage of Northwell’s many continuing education offerings, which have enabled her to develop new skills and flourish in her career. Plus, the culture at Northwell has fostered a real family atmosphere—what Patricia says her co-workers call the “pharmily.”

“We really care about each other and are supportive of each other’s lives outside of work,” she says. “My department has been very empathetic during my family’s autism journey by providing support to me as well as the organizations I volunteer for.”

In fact, her department is raising money to purchase a laptop for her son Christopher’s program, The Nicholas Center, which provides vocational and community programs for those with developmental disabilities.

Through good times and bad, her co-workers “kept me going with encouragement and love,” Patricia says. And she’s proud to note that one of her sons on the spectrum is a Northwell employee, making her career well cared for a true family affair.

Tina Chuck, Advisor with Fair Employment Practices

Tina Chuck joined Northwell in 2011, and just three years later, she formed the Office of Research Policy and Training at the Feinstein Institutes, which evaluates and manages centralized policies, research training, and professional development. Shortly thereafter, her young son was diagnosed on the autism spectrum. It was a very stressful time, as she was managing her new job responsibilities as the director, while trying to find the right work-life balance.

“Thankfully, I had supportive colleagues and reported directly to someone who proactively checked-in on my well-being and taught me how to self-advocate,” says Tina. “I am thankful to have the flexibility in my schedule to care for my son and have access to fabulous professional development resources.”

Now Tina will continue her journey this month as Advisor with Fair Employment Practices in which she is excited to get more involved with Northwell’s workforce equity, diversity, and inclusion strategy and focusing on a broad range of initiatives, including helping support and continue to evolve our BERGs and other social belonging and inclusion initiatives. Recently, she became the co-chair of the N-ABLE BERG and through N-ABLE, Tina has been able to apply her skills and work on programming and events focused on enhancing employee and patient experience for those who are neurodiverse. Her professional network grew as each new N-ABLE BERG initiative connected her with people across the organization and within the community and expanded her knowledge and dedication to diversity and inclusion.

“The opportunities are endless at Northwell,” says Tina, citing everything from team-building activities such as cooking at the Ronald McDonald House to making birthday boxes and duffle bags through Together We Rise for children in foster care.

“I love the passion and grit I see in my colleagues, and their selflessness in rolling up their sleeves to step out of their immediate job title to help others.”

Taking Imaging Skills in New Directions: Meet CT Technologist, Carmen Arana

Meet Carmen Arana, CT technologist at Northwell Health Reichert Family Imaging in Huntington, NY. During her career journey as an imaging specialist, Carmen has had some unique opportunities to expand her skills in different ways.

She studied Radiologic Technology at Westchester Community College before joining Northwell Health in 2014, and with Northwell’s tuition reimbursement assistance, Carmen continued her education to achieve a Bachelor of Science in 2021 from the CUNY School of Professional Studies.

As a CT technologist, Carmen operates a computed tomography machine to create detailed images of internal organs, bones, soft tissue, and blood vessels. She helps prepare patients for various exams and ensures that the radiologist has all of the clear information needed to make an informed diagnosis. Her responsibilities also include managing the patient flow and assisting the x-ray department, when needed.

Carmen knows her role as an imaging specialist at Northwell is meaningful. “I am able to provide a safe and complete diagnostic exam using state-of-the-art technology,” she says. “This encounter alone can have a huge impact on how a patient’s treatment progresses. I enjoy helping patients have the best experience possible and appreciate the thanks I am given in return.”

When a patient sees an imaging specialist, it is often at the start of addressing a health concern. A CT technologist like Carmen will guide a patient through what may feel like an intimidating examination. From collecting and entering health history to analyzing the number of scans required, a CT technologist aims to make the process as smooth as possible for every patient. Careful attention to detail results in reduced time under scanning equipment and more efficient outcomes.

When asked what makes working as a CT technologist at Northwell unique, Carmen says that it’s the different opportunities that team members are given to use and grow their skills. “I had a one-of-a-kind opportunity to work with The Nature Conservancy to scan samples of water from various marshes in our area. It was a project designed to help improve the quality of the water around Long Island. Having the ability to apply my knowledge in an area outside of my direct responsibilities gave me learning experiences I may not have otherwise been able to take advantage of.”

Carmen’s next step in expanding her knowledge is her intention to pursue a Master of Science in Health Informatics.

Jennifer Tutone experiences nearly three decades of career growth as a clinician at Northwell

A wise leader once said, when a door opens, don’t be afraid to walk through it. Jennifer Tutone has had many doors open during her 27-year career journey at Northwell Health and she has walked through every one with encouragement from her leaders. Each time, the other side presented opportunity and growth and she continues to embrace new professional experiences at Northwell.

Today, Jennifer is an assistant director of Patient Care Services and Nursing Administration at Staten Island University Hospital with administrative oversight of the hospital inclusive of operational needs, staffing, and patient experience. However, her Northwell career journey began in 1994 as a behavioral health nurse at Zucker Hillside Hospital. During her career journey, she worked across many hospital sites at Northwell and held many roles such as staff nurse, clinical practice coordinator, ambulatory health nurse, assistant director for nursing, site transformation manager, nurse manager, director of information technology, corporate director of innovation, and director of nursing. “Working for Northwell Health has presented me with opportunities to follow my passion for patients and nursing,” says Jennifer.

Jennifer was offered many positions internally because of the skills she learned with each role and her desire to continue learning. There were certain projects she led which opened up doors to new skills and advancement opportunities in roles she never imagined. “What I have learned from each position is to be agile, I have increased my skillset for project management, increased my skillset to being able to acclimate to a role quickly, and I have embraced the organization’s culture to become successful.”

Along her career journey, she had many opportunities to expand her knowledge and grow her skills. Jennifer received tuition reimbursement from Northwell and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master in Public Health. In addition, with the support of her leadership team, Jennifer grew her leadership skills and became responsible for significant projects that impacted the way our organization cares for patients in and out of the hospital. Their encouragement and support created an atmosphere of caring and development which allowed Jennifer to soar to her highest potential. “I am grateful for all of the opportunities which have been presented to me, as they have created the clinician I am today,” Jennifer.

“I value the fact that I can still call Northwell “home” after working here for 27 years and I am incredibly grateful to the individuals I have met along my career journey. My Northwell family will always be special to me and I look forward to continuing to create relationships as my journey within the organization continues.”
