Raise your career expectations on Staten Island – with more growth opportunities even closer to home

Clinical Support

Did you know: the average person who commutes one hour to work (each way) spends approximately two years of their life sitting in traffic by the time they reach retirement? A shorter commute means greater work-life balance. At Northwell Health, we have numerous Staten Island ambulatory care locations, which means it’s even easier to choose a closer commute matched with a valuable and rewarding career—one with growth and opportunity.

To give you more insight, read below to hear from Northwell medical assistants and administrative support associates who shared their experience of what it is like to work at some of these Staten Island locations.

“Prior to working at Northwell, I had a very long commute which made my workdays feel longer,” says Caty Takemoto, lead patient account representative with Northwell Health Physician Partners — Cardiology in Dyker Heights. Caty is responsible for billing, collections, third-party reimbursements, computer data entry, and retrieval. “Coming from New Jersey, the commute to Staten Island is relatively easy for me now and I love listening to my favorite songs in my car as I make my way to work.”

Katie Burns, senior medical assistant for Cohen Children’s Northwell Health Physician Partners Pediatric Surgical Specialists in Staten Island, also appreciates working closer to home and describes her professional growth and development with Northwell as fulfilling and life changing. “I have grown professionally throughout my time here at Northwell by taking on new challenges whenever they arise. As a medical assistant, many of my scoliosis surgical and bracing patients are young adolescents. It’s here that I can reinforce positive body image and provide emotional support to help them feel more confident as they heal.”

Helen Ruiz is a practice lead administrative support coordinator at Staten Island University Hospital South, Cardiology Department. Her role encompasses making sure that the physician at her practice has everything he needs to provide the best experience and care for our patients. “Working at Northwell Health in Staten Island has been extremely rewarding for me. My day begins with an easy commute and continues at a job where I am constantly learning new things and meeting great people who are very dedicated to their work. There is an opportunity to grow here, and I am grateful to be a part of the Northwell Health family.” Helen not only coordinates clerical duties, but she also greets and directs visitors, answers phones, takes messages, schedules appointments, collects payments, and maintains inventory of all office supplies.

The mission for Yovica Valentin: providing the best infant care at Cohen Children’s Medical Center.

Clinical Support

They say when you do something you love, it doesn’t feel like work at all. That feeling is something that holds true for Yovica Valentin, infant care technician at Cohen Children’s Medical Center (CCMC). Yovica has always had a passion for working with children and infants. With her role at Northwell, she’s able to fulfill that passion while working hard to fulfill another dream of hers; becoming a registered nurse (RN).

Yovica started her time at Northwell in 2018, working at Flexstaff as a Certified Nursing Assistant, caring for adults. She always wanted to work with children so in July 2021 she was thrilled to start a new position at CCMC as a pediatric nursing assistant. In February 2022, she transitioned to an infant care technician in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at CCMC.

As an infant care technician, she takes vitals, changes diapers, consoles and cuddles, feeds and baths the infants who are under her care. While overseeing and reporting any abnormalities during care to the nurses, Yovica also monitors and assists with discharges. Other responsibilities include taking inventory of supplies in patient rooms, infant cribs, and the circumcision room. She also helps to send labs reports and picks up orders from the blood bank. Yovica is dedicated to her work with all the newborns and finds meaning as she helps them grow so they can go home healthy as they begin life with their families.

Before she began her healthcare career, Yovica enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in January 2020 and completed basic training in July 2020 before returning home to begin serving at the Air National Guard base in Westhampton, New York. Currently as an active member of the U.S. Air Force, Yovica is an airman first class (E3) and will soon be promoted to a senior airman.

The U.S. Air Force’s core values are integrity first, service before self, and excellence in all we do. Yovica carries and displays those values not just while serving in the military but also while working at CCMC and in her everyday life outside of work. “I have learned the importance of stepping up to the plate and helping my fellow airmen in order to accomplish the mission at hand,” says Yovica. Yovica also appreciates the support she has received throughout her Northwell career from her hiring leaders, team members and the Office of Military and Veterans’ Liaison Services.

Yovica’s next step on her career journey is to become a registered nurse so she can continue to make a difference and impact people’s lives by providing the next level of care as a nurse. She recently passed her board exams and is now officially a licensed RN. Yovica’s leaders supported her throughout her time in school by offering her a more flexible schedule to accommodate her studying. She feels encouraged by her leaders and colleagues, who are constantly pushing her to follow her dreams. She plans to continue to be active in the military to commission to an officer position and work with the medical group on base as a registered. Yovica also plans on moving up to a registered nurse position and continuing her career journey with Northwell.

“Northwell Health is a great company to work for. If you enjoy helping and leaving a positive impact on others, then you belong here!” – Yovica Valentin

Celebrating Medical Assistants Recognition Week at Northwell Health

Clinical Support

Our medical assistant (MA) team members are an integral part of the patient experience. While assisting patients under the supervision of our physicians and nurses, our MA team members take the lead on multiple tasks for the patient from visit preparation to administering, obtaining and recording diagnostic laboratory test results to preparing and filing reports into a patient’s medical records. We interviewed a few of our amazing medical assistants — Natasha, Miriam and Cassandra — to discuss how their career and professional development has been supported at Northwell.

Tell us about your current role and what responsibilities you have as a medical assistant.

Cassandra Denis, Medical Assistant, Neurosurgery: I joined Northwell in 2020. Joining the Northwell team was one of the best transitions and accomplishments I made for my career. My responsibilities include assisting the clinicians and nurse practitioners by bringing patients to their exam rooms, checking blood pressure and reviewing their history and medications. I am also responsible for answering phone calls and booking appointments, scanning documents into patient charts and prepping for the next office hours.

Miriam Edwards, Senior Medical Assistant, Cardiology: I became part of the Northwell team when my office was acquired in 2008. As a medical assistant, I am responsible for preparing patients to meet with the cardiologist. This includes interviewing them to get their medical history, completing vitals and EKGs, completing stress tests, applying Holter monitors and acting as a patient navigator to help them through their visit.

Natasha Benn, Medical Assistant, General Pediatrics: I joined Northwell in 2012. As a medical assistant I assist providers in taking vitals, performing tests, prepping the room prior to a patient’s visit and disinfecting afterwards. I also scan and work on paperwork related to school, camp and medications forms and medical records, as well as work on administrative tasks.

How has your growth and development been supported by Northwell?

CD: Northwell has supported my growth and development in many ways. I am eager to learn from different departments while continuing to care for my patients with love, compassion and patience. Northwell has helped me grow my professional network and has given me the opportunity to cross train and learn so that I can grow as a medical assistant. Northwell always finds new ways to help their employees to progress in their career journey.

ME: Northwell has been excellent for career development. I feel supported in my goals, development, and work-life balance. I have even taken several classes to enhance my skills as a medical assistant.

NB: Northwell has given me opportunities to gain experience at other facilities and has given me opportunities to learn. I am now more aware and capable in dealing with difficult scenarios and situations when it comes to the health and care of our patients.

What do you love about your job at Northwell?

CD: What I love about Northwell and the department that I work for is that we are like a family. We treat each other with the utmost respect. My team is always willing to help each other through stressful times and find ways to do our best to make sure our patients leave their appointments happy and informed.

ME: Northwell has a great team atmosphere where I feel supported by the doctors and my team members. We each bring something different to the table and all come together to provide the best patient care.

NB: As Northwell team members we have opportunities to gain experience, information and knowledge by taking on different roles. I also love the diversity and culture that we are exposed to.

What do you think about when you hear “Medical Assistants Recognition Week?”

CD: I think about the love and appreciation the medical assistant team members will be shown for our dedication and hard work toward our patients and their needs. I see it as a week where we will be recognized for all that we do and a great way for others to learn more about the position and what we do on a daily basis.

ME: I’m extremely excited about Medical Assistants Recognition Week. It fills me with pride to know that I work with an organization and team that shows appreciation for my hard work. I feel a sense of pride and belonging, which further ignites my drive to bring my best every day!

NB: Medical Assistants Recognition Week is a time for appreciating the efforts and hard work a team member has contributed to their role for their team, patient and site. The week is about how their dedication and zeal affected a patient, team member, workflow, or environment in a positive way. The week also makes me think about the hard work that doesn’t go unnoticed. It makes us feel heard, seen and valued. Everything that we do when we go above and beyond overall seems worth it; though we don’t necessarily do it to be recognized, but we do it because we want to and we love what we do.

From nursing assistant to public relations, Angela Mandelos grew her career in unexpected ways at Northwell Health

Throughout this time, Angela was also given multiple opportunities by SSUH leadership to participate in various hospital committees which expanded her scope and knowledge of the health system.

That support made the decision to continue her education easy, attaining a bachelor’s degree followed by an MBA in Healthcare Management. Throughout this time, Angela was also given multiple opportunities by SSUH leadership to participate in various hospital committees which expanded her scope and knowledge of the health system.

The combination of her continued education, her desire to spread her wings, and Northwell’s workplace culture helped set new directions for Angela’s career journey in the organization. Angela embarked on a second phase in her career with the department of service excellence at SSUH. She became a certified patient advocate, led an award-winning team, and soon grew in her role again. First, she served as director of community relations and then as principal of public and media relations at SSUH, which is the role she holds today. “These positions expanded my knowledge of our community and the importance of preventive education,” Angela says.

Her experiences made her a thought leader in community engagement and communication, and Angela sees it as an opportunity to impact not only the workforce but the patients cared for at Northwell Health. Angela believes that her successes wouldn’t have been possible without a lot of teamwork, “I am grateful to have leaders and peers who support my ideas and offer continuous motivation; we support and respect each other.”

Angela’s Northwell career journey unexpectedly took her from nursing assistant to principal of public and media relations. When asked what inspired her to grow her career at Northwell, Angela explains, “My years as a nursing assistant provided me with firsthand knowledge of patients’ experiences, and the day-to-day efforts of frontline heroes. Those moments inspired me to keep pushing myself to be their voice and to help create an environment that brings smiles to all.”

One piece of advice that Angela has for both new and seasoned employees looking to grow their careers at Northwell: “Make every moment meaningful. Every moment is an opportunity to learn something new, make new connections, or to make a difference!”

The Motivation to Grow in a Northwell Career: Meet Senior Medical Assistant Samara Robb

Clinical Support

“I know my future at Northwell is bright.” That’s a common view shared by Samara Robb, senior medical assistant at Northwell Health Physician Partners Internal Medicine of Woodbury, Long Island, who sees endless career opportunities ahead of her.

Samara’s optimism is fueled by her experiences at Northwell, starting with the support she receives to tackle any challenge. “It feels good to know I can reach out to leadership for guidance in areas where I lack the knowledge,” she explains.

Feeling valued plays another important part. For example, Samara has seen her feedback for a pilot program — both pro and con — considered and implemented by leadership. The level of respect between leadership and her team has inspired her to become a leader herself, by returning to school for a bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration for leadership from Capella University. Northwell’s support extends to this effort as well: “Northwell’s tuition reimbursement program has been a great help,” Samara says. “It eases the financial burden.”

Samara embodies the Northwell core value of being Truly Ambitious as she pursues her dreams while taking care of patients, assisting physicians and training other medical assistants—highlighted by the relationships she builds with the patients she encounters. “Each day is another opportunity to put a smile on a patient’s face,” she says. “Whether it’s with a compliment or just a helping hand, it makes my day better knowing that I was able to help.”

That passion to help and support is integral to Northwell’s culture. Samara recalls a personal life challenge in which she had to miss work because of her grandfather’s passing. “Upon my return, my station was beautifully decorated with ‘I miss you’ and ‘We’re so happy you’re back’ messages,” she says. “It made me feel really appreciated and loved.”

Ask Samara for one (of many) reasons why she loves working at Northwell — and what makes Northwell a Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For — and she’ll say, “Respect. Knowing you are respected by your employer motivates employees.”
At Northwell, all employees are encouraged to pursue what growth means to them. With benefits including tuition reimbursement, learning opportunities through Northwell’s Center for Learning and Innovation (CLI), and a positive Culture of C.A.R.E., the support for growth is everywhere.

The angel of environmental services

Clinical Support

Written by: John Baez, Environmental Service Worker, Staten Island University Hospital

Environmental services is much more than keeping a clean environment. We are helping keep patients and their families remain comfortable.

I’ve faithfully worked for Staten Island University Hospital for 11 years, and travel three hours each way from my home in Yonkers on public transportation to help care for patients.

I’m not a clinical care provider, but my dedication to patient safety in the Environmental Services (EVS) Department is what I strive for. My coworkers and I are at the top of our field when it comes to bedside manner and being spirited patient professionals.

Unfortunately, our team is no stranger to a crisis. We saw the hospital through the evacuation ahead of Hurricane Irene, the aftermath from Superstorm Sandy the following year and even the Ebola crisis in 2014.

But COVID-19 was something entirely different and something we never faced before. It put the EVS team on the front line to help contain and eliminate the virus, which tested all of our abilities.

When the crisis was at its peak, I remember seeing one case after the other. People begging for their life, “I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe.” Before coronavirus, I would always try to befriend and comfort the patients. During the crisis, I showed them love when their loved ones couldn’t be at their bedside.

Then there was one day that would change me forever.

The faithful man

It was a regular day, and then one of patient care associates (PCAs) told me that this person is going to pass away. I knew the patient. I met her days earlier.

It was the end of my shift and I was ready to take my first bus home, but I said to myself “I can’t let this woman pass alone. I’m going to be there for her.”

I walked into the room and leaned over the patient and said, “It’s me, John. If you hear me, squeeze my finger. She did. I told her I want you to go with God. I want you to relax and once you see the light, I want you to go to it. I’m going to hold your hand until you go.”

The PCA cried alongside me.

I told the patient I would pray for her. On her third breath, she passed.

The doctor came in and checked her vitals, and confirmed what I already knew — she was gone.

I took the two busses and three trains home, replaying the day in my head. It’s always going to be with me and sad that she couldn’t have a loved one with her, but I couldn’t let her die alone.

I did what many health care heroes battling COVID-19 did: make the patients their second family and be their loved one.

During this crisis, my mother was begging me to quit because we’re dealing with something that’s new and scary. But we all have to be here. It’s our job. It’s what we signed up for.

John Baez works in the Environmental Services Department at Staten Island University Hospital.

How our medical office assistants are making a difference in patient’s lives

Clinical Support

Medical office assistants are typically the first people our patients interact with during their visit, helping to assess the patients’ needs. They have the unique opportunity to gain invaluable healthcare experience while developing their own skills and passion for patient care. And at Northwell, medical office assistants enjoy the close-knit atmosphere of working at a practice while still having access to career opportunities at New York State’s largest healthcare provider and private employer with 750+ ambulatory locations and beyond. With an unmatched combination of ongoing training, educational opportunities and tuition assistance, our medical office assistants are able to deliver care while they grow their career.

Hear from some of our medical office assistants on how they are making a difference at Northwell:

Atthis Nunez, Senior Medical Office Associate
“I have worked at a few Northwell practices as a medical assistant before becoming a senior medical assistant and I love being able to help the patients and make sure their needs are met.“

Dana Signorelli, Senior Medical Office Associate
“As a senior medical assistant, I am able to make a difference in a patient’s experience. I always wanted to be in the medical field because I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age three and was always surrounded by medicine. I wanted to be the person I always looked for while going to all of my appointments who made the experience fun and less scary. Being able to feel firsthand what these patients are feeling makes me able to relate to them.“

Iren King, Medical Office Associate
“My favorite thing about being a medical assistant is my interaction with patients. The joy I feel when I am able to be involved with their care and treatment is sensational. It gives me the satisfaction that I am making a difference.“

Joshua McLeod, Medical Office Associate
“I make a difference as a medical assistant by helping pediatric patients and their parents remain calm in the examination room. I really enjoy interacting with patients prior to the doctor going into the examination room and building relationships with newborns and their parents that last as they grow to become teenagers.“

Nafis Salcedo, Medical Office Associate
“The best part of being a medical assistant is the bonds we form with patients as the first line of care in the clinical area. I’m able to make a difference by treating each patient in a unique way according to their needs. I think it is important to make each patient feel welcome and comfortable with our care.”

Sara Marcos, Medical Office Associate
“My favorite thing about being a MOA at Northwell is that with the ability to work with many specialties, I am able to learn different aspects of the medical field. I’m able to make a difference by ensuring the office provides quality care for all of our patients.”
