Perioperative Nursing Fellowship
Oncology Fellowship

The Emergency Department Nurse Fellowship is a three-phase program that supports acquisition of the knowledge, skills, and abilities registered nurses need for successful transition into the emergency nursing specialty. The Fellowship encompasses medical, surgical and high-risk emergency care. Fellows are introduced to the care of neurological, cardiac and trauma emergencies, acquiring the competencies needed to work in a high-acuity, fast-paced emergency department. The program includes four major components:

  • Patient simulation experiences through the use of technically-enhanced, anatomically-correct mannequins such as SimBaby™, SimMan™, SimMan Essential™, SimMan 3G™, SimJunior™, and SimMom™
  • Clinical rotations within selected departments and in the emergency department
  • Individualized education and mentoring
  • Professional seminars and education sessions that focus on current emergency nursing modalities

The Critical Care Nurse Fellowship is a three-phase program that supports acquisition of the knowledge, skills, and abilities registered nurses need for successful transition into the critical care nursing specialty. Fellows are introduced to the care of complex, high-acuity patients, acquiring the competencies needed to work in Medical ICU, Surgical ICU, Coronary Care Unit, Cardiothoracic ICU, or Neurosurgical ICU environments. The program includes three major components of blended learning:

  • Patient simulation experiences through the use of technically-enhanced, anatomically-correct mannequins such as SimMan™, SimMan Essential™, SimMan 3G™, and SimJunior™
  • Didactic experiences and professional seminars that focus on comprehensive assessment skills, patient care management, interprofessional collaboration, nursing models of care delivery, and e-learning
  • Direct care assignments across the range of selected specialties under the supervision of experienced preceptors and educators that guide Fellows towards mastery of content and theory, clinical nursing skills, clinical reasoning, and high-quality patient and family centered care.

Pediatric nurse fellowships offer three programs:

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit Fellowship

This is a year-long experience comprised of three phases

  • Phase 1: 10 weeks of didactic content which includes lectures, hands-on-skills, simulation and supervised time on the unit with the master fellow, senior associate fellow, and associate fellows.  During phase one, fellows work closely with Northwell’s corporate simulation center to utilize anatomically correct mannequins of different ages and standardized parents/caregivers (actors) to enhance their experiences.  In addition, fellows are given access to an online learning platform to enhance and reinforce didactic content.
  • Phase 2: 12 weeks of the precepted experience.  New nurse fellows are paired with a preceptor and will follow their schedules.  Weekly goals are set with the preceptor and there are frequent check-ins with the nurse educator and nurse manager in order to individualize the experience to the needs of the nurse fellow.
  • Phase 3: Comprised of the remaining 30 weeks of the first year. During phase 3, nurse fellows work independently. The unit’s resource nurse, nurse educator and manager will continue to check in and support you throughout this period of transition.

Pediatric Hematology Oncology Fellowship

This four-month fellowship provides comprehensive clinical training in hematology, oncology, and stem cell therapy. The RN will be able to demonstrate the clinical skills needed in the pediatric oncology nursing process of assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation, and apply these clinical skills to provide safe, effective, and compassionate cancer care. The Pediatric Hematology/Oncology fellowship is a combination of didactic, simulation and being precepted.

  • Provides an opportunity to network with other novice perioperative nurses throughout the health system
  • Engages precepted orientation in our fast-paced operating rooms

The Oncology Fellowship is a multifaceted 16-week program that combines classroom, computer web-based training , simulation and preceptorship. It integrates inpatient and outpatient care for oncology patients.

Nurse Residency Program

All registered nurses with six months or less experience are enrolled in our nurse residency program, which is designed to support a smooth transition into professional practice. This year-long program, which begins with an in-depth orientation, helps new graduate nurses attain and maintain the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to provide safe care to patients and families and successfully navigate through the first year as a registered nurse.

The program, which is run by experienced nurse educators, includes both in-person and online professional development sessions, skills assessment and practice, development of a clinical project and in-depth learning of evidence-based practice. Nurse residents have an opportunity to socialize and interact with peers and leaders, while learning about topics such as patient and family experience, critical and analytic thinking, quality care, ethics of care and much more.
