Emerging Leaders Diversity & Inclusion Council

Women Mentoring Program

Community Health Workers Program

Advancing Women in Science (AWSM)

Northwell Health strives to maintain an industry-leading approach to diversity and inclusion to effectively manage our increasingly diverse workforce and serve our incredibly varied patient population. The Emerging Leaders Diversity & Inclusion Council is focused on building a culture of diversity awareness and inclusion at Northwell Health to better attract, develop, and retain enthusiastic and ambitious talent from all walks of life for all leadership levels. We encourage women, minorities, persons with disabilities and veterans with a passion for leadership to participate on the council. The council critically analyzes current conditions within Northwell Health while seeking to implement best practices in these key areas:

• Onboarding
• Mentoring
• Succession Planning

This council is helping develop an organizational culture that is more creative, innovative, and responsive to change in our market.

In Spring 2017, Physician Partners launched The Women’s Mentorship Program Pilot that paired women colleagues within Physician Partners with senior executive women throughout Northwell Health. The program, sparked out of a conversation over coffee between Ines Ruiz and Anjelica Butler, helped to fulfill a need for mentorship, networking, and professional development among women colleagues. With the support of Dr. Ira Nash and Kathy Donovan, Anjelica and Ines spearheaded a program that enabled women to be supported in their professional growth, to learn to navigate a large organization, and build lasting relationships among their peers and senior leaders. The 7 month pilot program concluded in September 2017 and was well-received by colleagues and Senior Leadership.

Northwell Health is excited to offer an innovative workforce development program called “From the Community, For the Community” through funding from the JP Morgan Chase Foundation.

The name of the program says it all. Committed to building a culture of health and equity of care, From the Community, For the Community trains job-seekers from traditionally disenfranchised communities and connects them with entry-level healthcare positions that focus on assisting individuals in overcoming access to care barriers. These positions include, but are not limited to, titles such as community health worker, outreach associate, health coach, health educator, patient navigator, and peer specialist.

This past March a group of nine program participants successfully completed the training program that included instructional, in-classroom training and a preceptor-mentored apprenticeship in the field. From the initial graduating class, five graduates were hired by Northwell Health and four earned employment at Choice For All, a community-based organization (CBO) in Roosevelt. A second cohort of 17 trainees is currently underway and scheduled for graduation on September 14.

The seven-week training program seeks talented, committed individuals and equips participants with the necessary transferable skills to be successful frontline public health workers. The program offers participants a stipend, a mentor to support professional development, and skills like motivational interviewing and patient navigation.

To qualify as a trainee, an individual must be over the age of 18, be comfortable in a health care setting and talking to people about their health, have a high school diploma or GED (preferred), and have valid New York State identification. In addition, the program is searching for individuals who are empathetic, know the community needs and assets, and have a passion to give back.

AWSM is comprised of female FIMR faculty who provide mentorship to high school students. The program invites about 50 girl scouts (10th & 11th grade) to learn about careers in biomedical research. The AWSM Girl Scout Award recipient(s) receive research training as summer interns at FIMR and a $2000 educational scholarship.
